Its it really July 4th weekend? Where did June go? Does anyone know? Anyway, we have been super busy. We have done two shows in June - the Ashland Strawberry Faire and Gwyn's Island Festival. Both were fun on different levels. Ashland was crazy busy. Great weather, great crowds, and the biggest strawberries from Ashland Berry Farm I have ever seen. These things were on steroids, I swear. I will have to see if my BIL got a photo of them.

Gwyn's Island was a small county fair. It was different in many ways. There was a good crowd (considering the small town) but everything was on a much slower pace. A bit hard to get use to at first. It was also HOT. But, we got to stay an extra night and really enjoyed the opportunity to rest for a day! The boys went crabbing - caught nothing, Fishing - again nothing and finally resorted to catching minnows for bait. That they did catch. And luckily they are young enough that they were OK with that!

Heading home, we made a delivery of fresh jam to Bena Country Store and after talking to the owner we were told there was a huge blackberry patch not far. So we scoped it out and it is huge. We made an attempt at picking but were ill-prepared in our shorts and flip-flops. We did manage to pick enough for a delish blackberry cobbler that night for dinner. But, we are making plan to go back. Hopefully the beginning of next week!

Our oldest son is on swim team this year and although he is not a strong swimmer yet, I am impressed with his dedication. He is having a good time and getting lots of activity in the water! He actually took 10 seconds off his 25m freestyle at thier meet on Wed. night. That tells you how slow he was at his first meet as its not typical for swimmers to shed 10 second off their time.

Strawberry What?

Many times I am approached by a customer asking if I have Strawberry Rhubarb Jam. My first response is….”your not from around here are you?”. But of course I know what it is as my dad LOVES Rhubarb. Me however, not so much. I should say I have not had it since I was my oldest son’s age so I may feel different about it now.

Well we finally found some fresh Rhubarb as it does not grow well around here. It’s funny how the smell of the rhubarb took me back to 1981. I felt I was in my parents’ kitchen surrounded by the orange counters and the microwave that was the size of the oven! Remember them? It probably leaked radiation but I thought we were cool as we were the first ones on the block who could nuke our food.

So, I made up a batch of Strawberry Rhubarb jam but I have no idea what it’s supposed to taste like. Therefore, its hard to tell if this is good, great or just OK? We don’t like selling anything but great so what is a girl to do? Can you tell me how Strawberry Rhubarb Jam should taste? Does it have a sour edge, just a little tart or is it sweet? Ours is kind of sweet and you can tell there is something more than Strawberries. I have a few customers who are waiting for me to make this so I am sure I can track them down to get them to give me their opinions but I am wondering if you know how it should taste?

Faviorite Quotes

We had a very nice relaxing show at The Elements Spa and Yoga Center. On a side note, it was a great place that everyone who is local should visit. The owner also makes a wonderful organic soap which I love!

It was a small show but packed full of neat people. I met several, but one wonderful woman stands out. She is a breast cancer survivor and had a wonderful aura about her. After first meeting her you could tell she knew who she was and was very happy in her skin. She shared with me her favorite quote to live by – which is now my favorite quote:

It struck me at my core. You see, although I have to remind myself many times, I should have a full understanding of this quote as I have walked down a difficult road and found out what really matters in life. Not only was I faced with the dreaded cancer card with my then two year old child, but my very dear friend had lived her young life as this quote stated. She, my dearest Samantha, was one to believe in life and all it had to hold. Although the last five of her years was full of cancer, surgeries, chemo, radiation, pills, scans, physical therapy and the list goes on, she saw the miracle in every day. She believed in positive thinking, meditation and yoga - even after most of her leg was amputated. She would of loved this spa..I am sorry we never were able to enjoy a yoga class together!

One thing I never thought would happen in our journey selling our homemade jam was the impact of the people we meet would have in my life.

We enjoy making homemade jam, giving back to our community through volunteering, fundraising for childhood cancer organizations, and working with local farmers. We receive wonderful comments and its great to see people who truly enjoy the fruits of our labor. But I never imagined the profound impact meeting our customers would make in my life. Every person has a story and I find joy that I can hear parts of their lives I would of never of known otherwise. Most comments are about their grandma or mother who has since past and how they use to make them homemade jam. Or stories of growing up in a simpler time - picking berries, canning their own food, etc.. But then there are other stories like the one I had with this lady that give me thanks that I am lucky enough to meet these people and to be reminded of the good things here on earth.

So while I was in this beautiful spa, with soothing background music and wonderful energy, I was blessed to be reminded of my missed friend Samantha, with this inspiring quote. As I said, it struck me at my core.

Beautiful Ruby Red

This time of year means one thing....small beautiful berries! Berry's are in abundance. Every Wednesday our local paper has a Flavor Section. Low and behold this weeks paper featured Strawberries!

The paper featured an article on making Strawberry Jam. It was fun reading about someone who was very fearful of making jam but was basically being forced to learn and write about it for this article.

Our garden holds a wonderful albeit very small berry patch. Unfortunately, that is only large enough to barley feed our berry loving family. We eat fresh strawberries anyway possible. My favorite: smoothies. I can hide all kinds of veggies and supplements (i.e., fiber) without my little ones being the least suspicious of eating healthy stuff. But we also make ice cream in the Via-mix, fresh berries and a Strawberry Pie!! Now that is why berries are love so much - yummy pie!!



My husband and our oldest son has already had a head start on the berry pickin' season. Last week we picked over 60 lbs of berries. So our day of fresh berry picking lead us out to a local farm. It was a wonderful way to slow down and re-connect with our community and nature. We picked our beautiful sweet berries from Poor John's Farms. We talked a great deal with Poor John. There is something special seeing and speaking to the people who grow the food you are eating. It not as easy as pulling a plastic package off the grocery store shelf but it is much more satisfasting and much tastier!

Seeing 60 lbs of berrys on our kitchen counter was a little overwhelming...yikes that is a lot of work ahead of us. But then my husband, in-laws and mother came to the rescue. With all of us working together we washed, hulled and froze them all in 40 minutes. Now I am sure there are many of professionals working on the Dole Factory line that could of done the same work in half the time but I was impressed with our quick work none the less.





This past week many of those beautiful berries were transformed into yummy Strawberry Jam and beautiful Strawberry Kiwi Jam. Not only is the flavor fantastic but they are picture perfect. They just look yummy.



...Now we are ready for round 2. As those 60 lbs are almost gone. But the jam is ready for our next few shows and internet orders.

Weekend Festivals and Country Stores

Last weekend we had a wonderful time attending a festival at the Glebe Church in Gloucester, VA. We received an invite to this festival after the Daffodil Festival earlier in March. This was their first year and it was a great sucess. Not only did they have a live band, several great vendors, and lots of great people attending but the setting was perfect. It was set on 17 acres at a historical home that was converted into a church. I left my Mom in charge of the tent long enough to get a little shopping done and go on a tour of the historical house. I missed a little of the history but it was built sometime during 1882-1885 and is in fantastic condition! I loved the home but the property is what was amazing. It had several out buildings: one being a chicken coop that was refurbished into the current church that holds about 30 parinishers. My first thought was how anyone could use a chicken coop to worship. But after taking a short tour (I mean very short) I saw first hand that the coop was transformed into a lovely worship center.

I found a new favorite product while shopping at the festival: Mojack Fresh Organic Free Trade Coffee. This coffee is freshly roasted in Gloucester and a portion of its proceeds go to Clean the Bay organizations. I purchased a pound of Bena Blend (special blend for the Gloucester area). We ground some up on Sunday morning and it was delish! This will defiantly be in the next Bed and Breakfast basket we give away. You can check out this great coffee and their company.

Finally, after a wonderful day at the festival, we stopped by our new friends John and Heidi’s newly opened store Bena Country Store and Frame Shop. It was the day of their Grand Opening. This store is Fabulous! It is a work in progress but I can tell it will be a huge hit. The building itself is the town's original General Store (about 100 years old if I remember correctly). They have a collection of penny candy (well, almost penny candy), candles, gifts, unique prints, a frame shop, and Fresh Batch Jams! We had to take some photos of our items in their first storefront!

It was a great day!

And Sunday was full of gardening. We still had lots of spring cleanup but most importantly we got the veggie beds ready for planting. Many peppers and tomato plants are in....60 days to yummy veggies and all the ingredients for Roasted Red Pepper Relish!

Here's mine:

My most vivid memory for Mother's Day was one from when I was about 7 years old. My dad and I made my mom breakfast in bed. I can't remember what we made her but I worked so hard at it and I was determined to do it all by myself. Everything was made with love and care, I carried it all on a tray to wake up my Mom with a surprise. Everything was perfect! Then, just before I woke her up, I spilled the entire glass of OJ on her. So instead of waking up happily to breakfast in bed, my Mom was jolted awake with a splash of OJ. I was heart broken. She assured me that the thought behind it was what she loved (I think we went out for breakfast after we cleaned up). I did not truly believe her at the time - the day was ruined because I spilled the OJ.

Well fast forward twenty some years and my dear oldest son made breakfast in bed for me last Mother's Day. He woke up early and snuck downstairs to prepare breakfast all by himself. He picked out my favorite cereal, fruit and OJ. I woke up to my sweet boy holding a tray full of breakfast goodies. He was so proud of himself! After taking the first bite, I stopped in my tracks. Something was off about this cereal. While I was trying to figure it out with a smile on my face, I asked my son "What milk did you use?" He replied "The one in the small carton". OH, now I knew what was off...the little carton was buttermilk! I ate as much as I could so he would not feel the same way I did after I messed up my attempt to make the best Mother's Day ever. At that moment, I then understood what my mom told me over twenty years earlier.
